Why WebP is worth the switch
WebP typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and dramatically smaller than PNG for photographs. On a page with twenty images, that is the difference between a site that feels instant and one that does not.
It also does something neither JPEG nor PNG manages alone: it handles photographs and transparency equally well. A logo with a transparent background and a product photo can both be WebP, so you stop juggling two formats.
Every current browser reads WebP — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and every mobile browser worth counting. The compatibility argument against it stopped being true years ago.
When to keep the original format
Keep PNG when you need pixel-exact output that will be edited again — screenshots destined for further work, or images with sharp text where every lossy artefact shows.
Keep JPEG when a system you do not control will consume the file. Some older CMS plugins, email clients and print workflows still expect JPEG and will refuse anything else.
For everything else on a website, WebP is the better default.
Common questions
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using its own image engine. Your files never travel across the network, which is also why the tool works with the network disconnected once the page has loaded.
- Can I convert several images at once?
- Yes. Drop in as many as you like, including a mix of formats — JPG, PNG and HEIC together is fine. Each file is converted independently, so one broken image never spoils the rest of the batch, and you can download everything as a single ZIP.
- What quality setting should I use?
- Start at 90%. That is visually indistinguishable from the original for almost any photograph while cutting the file size substantially. Drop to 75–80% for large background images where nobody is inspecting detail; go higher only when you can actually see the difference.
- Will WebP work on my website?
- Yes. WebP has been supported by every major browser since 2020, including Safari on iOS and macOS. WordPress, Shopify, Laravel and every current static site generator serve it without special handling.
